What Is Occupational Therapy?

What Is Occupational Therapy ?

O.T and the benefits

Occupational Therapy focuses on the person’s everyday activities such as bathing, personal care, cooking, eating, domestic tasks, work, caring for children, hobbies, socialising and accessing the community. When people are affected by a health condition or an injury it can turn daily activities into a challenge which can affect your quality of life, independence, and sense of identity. We want to empower you to maintain your independence and enjoy daily life, with less barriers to overcome.

We are proud to provide a holistic service; we plan and implement our interventions around the individual and their unique goals. This enables the person to live a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Part of our ethos at Avon Community Therapists is also working on preventative healthcare. We provide education and advice around healthy living, remaining active, managing daily stressors, and enabling people to successfully engage in roles that are important to them. For example, caring for a partner with Dementia. We can give advice on planning for the future, how to care for someone with memory problems, adaptations to the home, activities and classes that can benefit both, and much more.

Not many people know what Occupational Therapy is so please don’t be afraid to ask more!

Who we can help

We work with adults and older adults with a wide range of health conditions that are affecting their day-to-day life. These difficulties may be using the stairs, struggling to manage cooking, or feeling deconditioned and underconfident following a long period in hospital.

As an example, if you have COPD and suffer with shortness of breath this may be impacting on how far you can walk outside or even how long you can manage standing in the shower. We can give lots of advice on pacing, how to adapt the activity and your environment, and equipment that may help reduce the demands on your body. We understand that health conditions can affect people in different ways and so our input is always person-centred and designed around your individual needs and priorities.
